Ignition coil & Parts
The ignition coil is a high voltage (low current) transformer that converts the vehicle’s 12 volt power supply to the 25-30,000 volts required to jump the gap of the spark plug, thus instigating combustion.
Symptoms:
- Car may not start.
- Car may not run smoothly (engine misfires).
- Check Engine light is on.
Frequency of replacement: Usually the ignition coil lasts for 100,000 to 120,000 KMs. Need to be replaced only if symptoms are visible.
Spark plugs
Spark plugs are responsible for igniting the fuel that your engine uses to run. When you turn your key, a small voltage of power is sent to the ignition coil, where it is transformed into high voltage currency. This high voltage currency is sent through the ignition cables to the spark plugs. The spark plugs use the power to create a spark, which ignites the fuel, and allows the engine to function. When the spark plugs malfunction, this spark won’t be created, and the fuel will not be ignited as it should. Your vehicle has many spark plugs, so depending on how many fail, your engine may either run poorly, or not run at all. Continuing to drive a vehicle with malfunctioning spark plugs can also cause damage to the catalytic converter.
Symptoms:
- Check Engine light is on.
- Engine misfires.
- Poor fuel economy.
- Vibration coming from the engine.
Frequency of replacement: usually normal spark plugs lasts for 40,000 – 50,000 KMs. If iridium spark plugs are used, it can last up to 80,000 KMs.
Distributor
The distributor houses a rotor that facilitates the spark necessary to ignite the fuel in a vehicle. The rotor turns within the distributor, connects with the ignition coil, and creates electric current. This current pass to the spark plugs, which deliver the current from the rotor to the combustion chamber and enable the car to start.
Symptoms:
- Vehicle shakes abnormally while at an idling stop
- Vehicle stalls while at an idling stop
- Vehicle backfires
- Vehicle’s RPMs are not steady (varying widely instead of smoothly raising, lowering, or maintaining)
- High pitched squealing noise
- Car tries to start, but won’t completely turn over
Frequency of replacement: Only when the symptoms are visible.
